Jacques-André tells the story of Hunter, the silver award winning image
I am thrilled that the jury recognized this image, as this is one of my favourite wildlife moment of 2017.
I took this photo during my last South Africa trip when I spend some time in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve (at the Nkorho Bush Lodgewhich I recommend without hesitation!).
Sabi Sand is a perfect place to find and photograph formidable and elusive leopards. And I got to see quite a few... This photo was taken as a beautiful young female was hunting. It is so impressive to see them hunt: focussed and in stealth mode.
It very early in the morning, with little light and this leopard was moving very, very slowly in tall grass. So it was somewhat of a challenging shot. I had to override the focus to go passed the grass and lock on the animal. But in the end, I was really happy with the image as we do get the feeling of the animal in full hunting mode. I wanted the image to be in black and white for the raw feeling it would create.
